NordVPN has launched a new experimental product called File Checker, an online tool that scans files for malware and viruses. The tool uses machine learning, AI, and other advanced techniques to check against a huge database of known malicious file hashes. Users can upload suspicious files to the tool, which will alert them if the file is safe or potentially malicious.
The technology behind File Checker involves calculating the file’s hash in the browser and sending it to NordLabs’ backend for analysis. The process does not involve transferring the file outside the user’s computer, ensuring high cybersecurity standards are met.
While File Checker is a valuable tool for manual file checking, users who need constant file checking or want to block malicious files before they download can consider using Threat Protection Pro. This feature uses AI solutions to automatically scan and block malware-ridden files, as well as block malicious websites and prevent trackers and intrusive ads.
The company notes that certain file extensions, such as “.exe”, “.zip”, “.php”, “.dll”, and “.pdf”, are commonly used to harbor malware and advises users to be cautious when downloading files with these extensions. File Checker is the third product developed by NordLabs, a platform for exploring emerging technologies and creating new tools and services.
